11,000 homes in Northumberland County will be getting faster internet access.

High-speed internet is now taking root in as crews are installing fibre optic cables in Canton, Port Hope and Trent Hills.

A combined $64.2 million investment will see approximately 33,000 rural people obtain improved internet. Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini said he understood the need for connectivity following a community meeting north of Brighton.

“I saw all walks of life. I saw young people wanting to be connected. I saw farmers trying to grow agri-business. I saw first-responders who said ot was a matter of life and death. I think it can unite every facet of our beautiful Northumberland County with the need for reliable connectivity,” said Piccini.

Construction is expected to continue this year on installing fibre optic cables. Axel Telecom, who is performing the work, will be contacting homeowners to connect the fiber along their properties.

“High-speed internet is essential for rural communities across Ontario, which is why it is a top priority for our government. This will make a lasting impact on education, healthcare, and provide local businesses with an essential tool to grow,” stated Piccini.

The first phase of the project is already underway. The project is intended to connect unserved or underserved households with high-speed internet.
