The Northumberland Hills Hospital Auxiliary announces a July 30 deadline for students to apply for this year's Dixie Mikel Scholarship

The Northumberland Hills Hospital Auxiliary board of directors reminds all NHH student volunteer that Thursday, July 30, is the deadline to apply for its annual Dixie Mikel Scholarship.

These $1,250 scholarships are awarded annually by the board to a successful applicant who has accumulated at least 80 volunteer hours at NHH and who has been accepted to (or is attending) a post-secondary institution, taking courses that lead to a degree in health sciences, nursing, medical research or biotechnology.

This scholarship was created in memory of the late Yvonne (Dixie) Mikel, wife of prominent local physician Dr. Don Mikel and long-time auxiliary supporter at the former Cobourg hospital site on Chapel Street.

She is credited with founding the Student Auxiliary Volunteer program, which continues to this day – in expanded form – at NHH.

The scholarship is presented annually, generally in late fall or early winter.
