The Cobourg Police Service has launched it's July Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP), with officers focusing on speed-related infractions throughout the month.
Police say with the summer season comes increased traffic, more families on vacation, and higher pedestrian and cyclist activity — raising the risk of serious collisions, especially when drivers speed.
“Summer is a time for enjoying the outdoors and spending time with family, but it’s also a time when our roads become more active,” said Constable Taylor Emmerton. “According to the Canada Safety Council, speeding is one of the leading causes of serious collisions. Through our July STEP initiative, we’re focusing on education and enforcement to help keep roads safe.”
Officers will be conducting targeted enforcement in high-traffic areas and zones with frequent complaints, while also engaging with the public about the risks of speeding.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down, plan ahead, and take extra caution near parks, residential neighbourhoods, and the waterfront.
