Capitol Theatre's Artistic Director Rob Kempson has announced accessibility-related updates on the occasion of National AccessAbility Week.
While the entire Port Hope theatre is physically accessible to both audiences and artists, Kempson said, “it's also a high priority that we're an artistically accessible space as well.
“Meaningful access to services and opportunities – including the performing arts – is an essential part of an inclusive and healthy community. We're proud to offer multiple ways to experience the incredible work happening both on our stages and behind the scenes.”
One key innovation is the Relaxed Performance. This is a theatrical production adapted to be more welcoming and inclusive for individuals with sensory sensitivities, autism or other conditions that can make traditional theatre environments challenging.
At the Capitol, a Relaxed Performance will see house lights above the audience remain on at a low level, with loud noises in the show possibly softened and seat assignments designed to allow audience members to get up and move around. Quiet spaces outside the theatre will also be designated for anyone looking to relax or take a break during the show.
Each Summer Season feature has a designated Relaxed Performance 2 p.m. matinee – Bad Hats Theatre's Alice In Wonderland on May 25, Waitress on June 22, Steel Magnolias on July 27 and Rez Gas on Aug. 31. Tickets to Relaxed Performances are offered at a discounted rate, and the Capitol also provides one free ticket for guests attending with a support person.

The Capitol worked with Relaxed Performance consultant Rachel Marks on this new program, which is supported by the Capitol's Accessibility Sponsor, Milly's Market in Port Hope.
Another innovation is Indigenous Community Nights on the second Friday of each Mainstage performance this summer, when those who identify as Indigenous can access a special rate on their ticket and experience the magic of live professional theatre close to home – a 50% discount by booking on-line or calling the Capitol box office for designated evening performances – Bad Hats Theatre's Alice In Wonderland on May 23, Waitress on June 20, Steel Magnolias on July 25 and Rez Gas on Aug. 29.
Pay-What-You-Can Previews offer special pricing for Mainstage and Second Stage preview performances to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to attend live professional theatre in the community.
Free Talk Back Thursdays are offered after every Thursday-night performances of Mainstage Summer Season productions, giving audience members a chance to connect with artists and learn more about the process of making live theatre.
Behind The Scenes Access programming includes backstage tours, artist talks, design presentations and special events to take audiences behind the scenes and closer to the work being created. These events are free for subscribers and offered at only $5 to all guests.
At all times, the Capitol offers general assistance, accessible parking, wheelchair and low-mobility access and seating, accessible washrooms and hearing-assistance devices. To learn more, visit https://capitoltheatre.com/accessibility/
