Revitalization of the Hub Library Branch in Canton is underway after the Port Hope Public Library conducted community engagement sessions in May and June. Library Board member Gemma Sim presented findings to Port Hope Council Tuesday saying public one-on-one surveys and focus groups revealed promising data about the use of the rural branch.
“Data analysis has suggested that the Hub Branch visitor rate are low, but there are significant opportunities to enhance its value and promote the use of the Hub in the future,” explained Sim.
A review of the library was conducted to understand why the patron rates are so low. Sim stated that data collection appears that the public is aware of the Hub Branch and the services it provides.
Users of the Hub go to the library for book selection, to access children's toys and games or the use of the free Wifi, which is accessible 24/7, even from the parking lot. Most visitors to the Hub make use of the programs and other services or a scheduled event.
The most effective marketing channels to the Hub are social media, library staff and the library website.
The presentation to council suggested that the community and library staff have suggestions to enhance services, which would have minimal financial impact. These ideas which were not provided are being explored.
“We have to look to ensure that the Hub is providing the services that the community wants,” Sim said.
The Hub operates 12 hours a week over four days. Sim said a full report regarding the revitalization study will be presented at the Port Hope Public Library Board September meeting
