Environment Canada has issued an extended heat warning for the areas of Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough, and Peterborough County, expected from today, July 11th through to at least Thursday, July 17th.
Daytime highs are forecast to reach up to 32, with humidex values between 35 and 40.
Overnight temperatures are expected to stay above 19, providing little relief from the heat.
The hottest day is expected to be this Saturday.
The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit and Peterborough Public Health say surrounding regions, including Northumberland County and Haliburton, may also be impacted.
Officials warn that extreme heat can cause serious health issues like dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
Infants, seniors, outdoor workers, people who are unhoused, and those with chronic health conditions are especially at risk.
People are encouraged to: stay hydrated and drink plenty of water, avoid outdoor activity during peak heat times, wear loose and light clothing, keep blinds closed and lights off indoors, check in on vulnerable neighbours and family members, and never leave pets or people in parked vehicles.
Anyone experiencing symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, confusion, or have stopped sweating should seek immediate medical help, as these can be signs of heat stroke.
