A grant from the Shoppers Foundation for Women's Health will help United Way Northumberland observe Menstrual Health Day in a meaningful way.
May 28 is Menstrual Health Day, and United Way Northumberland was pleased to be able to celebrate with a $20,000 grant from the Shoppers Foundation for Women's Health in support of their Period Promise initiative.
This critical funding will expand the reach of their Period Promise kits that provide free menstrual products to local women and youth who are experiencing poverty.
Period Promise is part of UWN's broader commitment to remove barriers for families experiencing financial hardship, particularly those that affect women's health and dignity. This new funding means the program can expand to offer a range of menstrual-support options, including one-month kits, the new Dignity Bag, six-month supply kits and the Org Box – a one-year supply that individuals and organizations can sponsor on behalf of a local nonprofit.
The program also now includes community sponsorship opportunities, inviting individuals and businesses to become a partner in making menstrual equity a reality for all.
“Thanks to the generous support of the Shoppers Foundation for Women's Health and the partnership of Cobourg Shoppers Drug Mart, we're able to continue our work ensuring that no woman or girl in Northumberland has to choose between food and period products, UWN Executive Director Alicia Vandine said in the announcement.
“Access to menstrual care is a matter of dignity, health and equity. Poverty may not care what time of the month it is, but we do.”
Menstrual Health Day is celebrated globally on May 28, highlighting the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation and addressing the challenges many face in managing their periods with dignity.
