The Town of Cobourg will be observing today as a National Day of Mourning to recognize all who have lost their lives or suffered an injury or illness on the job resulting from a work-related event.

Members of council will attend the Northumberland Labour Council's National Day of Mourning event at 4 p.m. in Lucas Point Park, and flags across town will be lowered to half-staff to commemorate the day.

The town is also asking members of the community to take the time to acknowledge those who have lost loved ones as a result of a workplace incident, and to recognize workers who have had their health and well-being impaired due to workplace events.

In 1991, Canada's Parliament passed the Workers Mourning Day Act to make April 28 an official Day of Mourning. The concept has since spread to more than 100 countries around the world and is recognized as Workers' Memorial Day – and as International Workers' Memorial Day by the International Labour Organisation and the International Trade Union Confederation.
