On Wednesday, following the county council meeting at which the proclamation was declared, Northumberland County Warden Brian Ostrander and Director of Public Works Denise Marshall left the county building to raise the Dig Safe flag on the community flagpole to proclaim April as Dig Safe Month.

In doing so, Northumberland join communities across Ontario in this safety campaign urging residents, businesses and contractors to take that first step and contact Ontario One Call before digging begins.

Whether you are planting a tree in your yard or breaking ground on a new construction project, knowing what is below before you dig can prevent serious injury, service disruptions and costly repairs.

“Every time someone digs without checking what's underground, they're taking a risk” Ostrander warned.

“Dig Safe Month is a reminder that prevention starts with a simple step. By submitting locate requests, residents and contractors help protect critical infrastructure, ensure public safety and avoid costly interruptions to essential services.

“It's quick, easy and makes a big difference.”
